If your thing is massive torque, instantaneous power and an intuitive control experience, there are four little numbers you should know.
1650. It comes race ready to dominate everything on the water. The 9.0 liter quad cam, four-valve engine delivers Godzilla-like power throughout the RPM band.
Larger turbochargers provide greater airflow for enhanced power and torque. SmartCraft Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS), provides big power with luxury-car-like drivability. Racers will appreciate Mercury Racing's proprietary pulse-separated exhaust tuning which keeps turbos "spooled up," virtually eliminating throttle lag and low-end torque deficit.

Power
The larger turbochargers on the 1650 combined with pulse tuned exhaust and electronically controlled waste gate give the engine access to its full potential with virtually no lag
|
Driveability
The long flat torque curve of the engine combined with Digital Throttle and Shift allows the 1650 to rocket you to speed with the smoothness and ease of a high-end luxury vehicle throughout the full RPM range. (image / video from PLM to highlight)

Cooling
With 1650 horses on tap, the engine is bound to heat up. Piston cooling jets combined with upgraded forged alloy pistons help dissipate heat more efficiently so you and your engine can stay cool

Powerboat racing engine based on Mercury Racing's exclusive quad cam, four valve (QC4v) engine platform
- 9.0L – 90 degree DOHC V-8
- Race fuel calibration requires 112 AKI Sunoco or equivalent race fuel
- Larger turbochargers for enhanced power and torque
- Aluminum block and heads for reduced weight
- Durable NiCom® coated aluminum cylinder bores
- NiCom coating improves heat transfer and durability
Quad cam, four valve (QC4v) design optimizes power and torque throughout the engine operating RPM range
- Intake and exhaust port flow is significantly improved over conventional 2-valve heads
- Overhead cam design extends the operating rpm range
Electronic turbo-compressor management delivers a broad torque under all operating conditions
- New closed cooled turbochargers feature a ball bearing supported shaft for enhanced durability
- An enhanced compressor wheel design provides greater airflow for enhanced power and torque and improved sound quality
Integral exhaust system designed and developed specifically for QC4v
- Pulse separated exhaust tuning (from Mercury Racing's expertise in high performance 2-stroke engines) improves low RPM turbocharger response
Corrosion:
- Engine and turbocharger center sections are closed cooled for enhanced corrosion protection and engine durability
- The charge cooler is made of a military specification alloy for excellent corrosion resistance
Advanced Electronics:
- Propulsion Control Module (PCM) microprocessor with race specific fuel calibration
- Digital Throttle and ShiftEngine Guardian: real-time, self-protection engine fault diagnostics and messaging
- Single-turn "SmartStart"
- Automatic throttle synchronization
- "Shadow mode" (where two levers control three or four engines)
- Sequential fuel and spark105 amp charging system (50% more output compared to competitive models) – ample power supply for today's advanced marine electronics
- Provides excellent fuel economy and run quality
Propulsion System:
- All new hydraulic transmission to handle the 1650's massive torqueNew Pro Finish 5 & 6-blade CNC sterndrive propellers are designed with stamina for the 1650's massive torque and surface piercing impact
- M8 sterndrive, packed with heavy-duty components, is designed specifically to handle the 1650's higher torque
- Delivers 35% more capacity than the legendary Six drive
- Two inches shorter resulting in an overall lower center of gravity for improved handling and overall boat performance
- Features twin pinion gear shaft design (first patented by Mercury for outboard racing back in the 1950s)
- Innovative design splits the torque load for a high power capacity while maintaining a slim gear housing shape for hydrodynamic efficiency
- Dry-sumped for maximum power-output
- An active anode enhances corrosion resistance by adjusting its current to the protection need
- Suitable for: Catamaran Race & Vee-Bottom Race
